Approximately 365,000 vaginal births per year are attempted in the United States. Vacuum assisted deliveries (VAD) are rapidly replacing forceps deliveries in the United States and abroad. However, several potential weaknesses exist with VAD:
- Existing instrumentation does not allow automatic recording or creation of a permanent record,
- The mechanical gauges used on the vacuum pumps can be highly inaccurate, and
- Guidelines for use of vacuum equipment are inconsistent.
Leaders in the obstetrics community have published six vacuum-specific details that should be documented during the delivery:
- Maximum vacuum
- Time at maximum vacuum
- Total time of vacuum
- Number of pulls
- Number of involuntary releases (pop-offs)
- Reduction of vacuum between contractions
VacuLink™ will be the standard of care for documenting VAD. With its highly accurate electronic gauge, VacuLink solves the problem of real-time permanent documentation and inaccurate vacuum gauges, and will contribute valuable clinical data to clarify guidelines regarding proper use of vacuum.
